One of the most rewarding careers is nursing, not only because of the care being given to patients who may be suffering from debilitating or life threatening illnesses, but because it is also a career that has room for advancement. While many licensed practical nurses are content to make a career as a practical nurse, some choose to use it as a stepping stone to becoming a registered nurse, a registered nurse certified (in a specialty field), or even a nurse practitioner. While each level of nursing requires a certain amount of educational courses to qualify for taking the licensing examination, they also need so many hours of continuing education courses to keep their licenses in good standing and/or to renew them prior to expiration.

Licensed practical nursing schools are set up to train the first level of nursing that does not require a degree program such as an Associateís Degree, a Bachelorís Degree or a Masterís Degree. A licensed practical nurse is actually known as a certificate program and it usually takes approximately one year to complete, but is some circumstances may take as long as two years. This is dependent on the amount of time the nursing student has to dedicate to taking the required courses. Upon completion of the program at licensed practical nursing schools, the nursing ëcandidateí then is required to pass a State Board examination in the state in which he or she will be practicing as a nurse.

Finding licensed practical nursing schools in your area can be accomplished in a few different ways. The first thing you may want to do is do a quick internet search and type in the keywords ìlicensed practical nursing schools in (your city and state).î A number of schools should come up and you can contact them either online or by making a phone inquiry at the number provided on their websites. Many licensed practical nursing schools also offer what is known as ëdistance learningí so that students can do some of their coursework from home, at their convenience. This is ideal for nursing students who need to hold down a full time job while studying.

The other way to find licensed practical nursing schools would be to contact community colleges, vocational schools and universities in your area. Many of these schools do offer nursing programs that will either award you with a certificate, such as in an LPN course, or a degree upon completion of RN, RNC or Nurse Practitioner graduate coursework. One thing to be aware of when taking a course online is that only some of the courses will be available for credit online. There will be some clinical/practical work that will need to be undertaken at an accredited hospital or other medical institution. This hands-on work is an integral part of the degree and must be completed prior to graduation and/or certification. Many of these schools can also help you apply for federal financial aid, so when you find a school you are interested in, don’t forget to see what types of aid are available!

There are so many fields and specialties in the nursing profession; a Nurse Practitioner job description will help you understand this specialty. The nursing prerequisites are similar to most nursing school program advanced degrees.

In order to become a nurse practitioner or NP, the student has completed a minimum of a Masters Degree in advanced Nursing education and is trained to diagnose and manage common illnesses such as those in the elderly or pediatrics. They are able to manage chronic illnesses and provide a very wide range of health care services. Some of the care they provide is the same at that which is provided by a doctor, they work closely with physicians and can provide regular care to a patient.

It is necessary to have a RN qualification to become a NP, and this can be done through online courses, hospital based programs, community and other colleges and universities.

Patients in the care of the nurse practitioner are from all age groups and the core philosophy of this nurse is based in individual care. They can care for patients illnesses as well as the effects this illness has on the family of the patient. Below are the “Key Performance Areas” or KPA’s:

Key Performance Areas (KPA’s)

Preventative health care as well as education for wellness are priority as this means fewer doctors visits, prescriptions and expensive treatment is required. This nurse encourages patients to get involved in their own care and helps them to understand what to expect. They are often actively involved in patient advocacy. This is a state regulated profession, and because of this key performance areas are varied. These include but are not limited to:

Collaboration with physicians and other health care personnel and providing patient referrals.

Education and counseling of patients and their immediate families or care giver.

Diagnosis and treatment of injuries, infections, and acute illness

Diagnosis and treatment of chronic illness as well as management of these conditions. This included heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and others.

Physical examination and collection of medical history

Ordering, administering and interpretation of the results of diagnostic studies, including but not limited to blood tests, X-Rays, and EKG’s

The prescription of medication

Referrals for rehabilitation treatment and physical therapy

Family planning and pre natal care

Well baby and child care including immunization and screening

Annual physical examinations and health maintenance for adults

Careers

They practice in all states, and in all types of institutions, including private practice. Careers for the Nurse practitioner are available in all fields including community health, HMO’s, health departments, home care, hospitals, clinics, hospice, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, nursing schools, physicians offices, occupation health and industry, travel, schools, VA, and other Government departments, free and walk-in clinics. In most instances a nurse practitioner specializes in one area of health care, and there are as many NP specialties as there are medical.

Conclusion

Because of the far reaching possibilities of the Nurse Practitioner profession, a high quality, individual and very cost effective health care scenario is the end result of the provision of their services. Insurance providers cover the cost of this type of care in most instances as it is less expensive than always consulting with a physician. And you know how health insurance companies are about cost!

If you need a career that will provide you with opportunity and advancement you need to look at enrolling in one of the RN online nursing programs. These programs can give you the education and career that will assure you of financial and personal success for the rest of your life. In 2 years you can be a registered nurse and have the kind of life that you have always wanted. You might also want to consider online LPN nursing classes.

Like many other people today, you may be looking to change jobs because of poor pay and lack of advancement potential. There are plenty of folks who are tired of being underpaid and under-appreciated. Minimum wage jobs can not help you support a growing family and with the economy faltering it is harder to make ends touch.

As a registered nurse you will be set to work in any state that you wish. Finding employment will not be a problem for you any more. Employers will be begging you to come and work for them. Your advancement possibilities are numerous and the sky is truly the limit.

In fact, there is a chronic, worldwide shortage of qualified nurses (you can read here about the reasons for the nursing shortage).

online nursing programs may just be the opportunity you have been searching for. You can take the courses when you want to and do so at home. Hard working adults now have many more convenient options for furthering their education. You can make the most of this opportunity by enrolling in one of the registered nursing schools that will provide you with a lifetime career.

The excuses you have used in the past are no longer valid. With online registered nursing schools you are free to set your own schedule. You don’t have to commute and you can set your own pace for study and tests. And of course, the costs can be significantly lower. At the very least, you avoid the expenses associated with travel, parking, etc. And the reality is, the tuition costs for online classes will almost always be significantly lower than that for a campus nursing school program.

One thing to keep in mind is accreditation. There are many online programs and courses that my offer some good educational value, but aren’t accredited. Without valid accreditation, you may not be able to pass or even take your licensing certification exam, or able to work in many nursing jobs.

There are two national organizations that accredit nursing education programs. The NLNAC, or National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission provides accreditation covering accredits all types of nursing education programs including master’s programs (MSN), baccalaureate degrees (BSN), associate’s and diploma. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or CCNE accredits programs that offer only master’s and baccalaureate level nursing degrees.

There are many fully accredited RN online nursing programs that offer flexible on-line courses. You can also apply for financial aid assistance. These schools will even provide you with tutors and additional instruction as needed. You will find that there is a great deal of help and support in the online school setting.

The field of nursing in itself encompasses many different specialties and the ability to work as a nurse and specialize in a particular aspect or type of health related issue is very appealing to many. There are some nurses who realize that the skills they have can be utilized in other professions. Combining the skills of nursing with other entities can be both helpful and lucrative. For this reason, many colleges and universities offer dual degree programs where students interested in nursing can also pursue another degree simultaneously that is either closely related to nursing or compliments the nursing degree.

There are a few dual degree options and one of the most popular is the Masters of Science in Nursing and the Masters in Public Health (MSN/MPH) dual degree. This program combines the clinical specialization of a master’s level nursing degree with a specialized master’s level public health degree. Nursing and public health are very closely related and obtaining dual degrees can be very beneficial especially for people interested in public health nursing.

These two degrees allow an individual to be fully informed on the clinical aspects of nursing while being capable of applying these specialized skills on a much broader level helping not just one patient but a larger number of individuals to improve their health.

An additional dual degree nursing program is the BSN or MSN and a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) option. The combination of a medical and law degree is extremely helpful. There are many nurses who work for lawyers advising them on various health issues in relation to medical lawsuits. Many good medical malpractice and disability lawyers have a medical consultant-many times a nurse-to whom they seek counsel on cases. There are some nurses who decide after years of clinical work to utilize their skills legally by becoming malpractice and disability lawyers. With the clinical expertise and the legal training many find possessing a nursing degree coupled with a law degree to be quite lucrative.

Finally, for nurses looking to use their medical expertise in the business world there is the option of a BSN/MSN coupled with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). There are many nurses who choose to use their medical expertise to head major organizations such as insurance companies. Some nurses even decide to open their own long-term care facilities and medical information companies. The MBA provides a solid business foundation which will aid a nurse in applying his/her medical abilities in a variety of circumstances.

The decision to pursue a dual degree in nursing and another discipline will provide unlimited opportunities to apply clinical medical knowledge in a variety of settings.

There are even RN to BSN programs available through online programs. These are perhaps the most convenient way for any nurse to complete their transition from RN to BSN. The programs offer courses that can be scheduled when you have free time and you do not have to struggle to fit your life around nursing courses any longer.

If you are an RN and you have been interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree online RN to BSN programs may be the perfect solution. You will be able to continue working your regular job and can take courses as needed or when you are able to fit them in to your own schedule. The online nursing community offers quality instruction and you can even find tutors if you need to.

The courses for the RN to BSN program offer you the opportunity to study and learn at the pace most comfortable for you. There is no need to rush to finish courses and miss half of the material in the process. You can complete the courses and the work as you learn it. Having online courses is one of the least stressful ways of getting a nursing education. Online courses are every bit as challenging as on-site courses, but you have time to learn the material at a comfortable pace and rhythm. The key in selecting the right nursing program is to choose which route is right for your lifestyle. Whichever route you choose to get your bachelor’s degree should be the one that you feel most comfortable with.

Nursing programs at community colleges offer a lower-cost alternative to other nursing schools. In addition to the cost benefit, a community college can help you become a nurse without having to “leave home”. You can also apply for nursing school loans.

One important measure of the quality of a community college nursing program is whether or not it is accredited. Accreditation is a voluntary process in which schools engage to prove the worth of their programs. Several different agencies bestow accreditation, so to ensure good quality, there are a few agencies that monitor and oversee accreditation. Find out if the community colleges you are interested in attending are accredited by quality agencies by visiting the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, both of which maintain excellent up-to-date listings of accredited institutions.

There are many different nursing degree programs that can be taken at community colleges, and the program in which you enroll will determine what type of degree or certification you will have upon graduation. Many community colleges offer certificate programs, which are shorter terms of study and offer opportunities to work in careers such as a nursing assistant.

Most community college nursing programs also offer associate degrees, which are usually two-year programs, and will prepare you to become a registered nurse. Many community colleges also offer Bachelor’s degrees, which will also prepare you to become a registered nurse, but will provide you with many more career opportunities within the field of nursing.

Most nursing programs at community colleges prepare students for the NCLEX-RN exam. Many programs offer practice exams as a part of the curriculum as well as other opportunities for preparation. Nursing programs with a high pass rate on the NCLEX-RN exam receive recognition, so it is beneficial for both the student and the school to prepare graduates for success on the NCLEX-RN.

It is very likely that you will be able to receive financial aid for a nursing program at a community college. The first thing you should do is speak with someone at the financial aid office at the school you are interested in attending to discover what opportunities are available.

Nursing programs at community colleges offer many of the same benefits that you’d receive from a university, while also offering the opportunity to get that nursing degree that many might not otherwise be able to do. Some community college programs will also let you take some of the required course work online.
