Nursing allows for a career to encourage the student to take part in the care of others while working as a valuable part of the health care team with multiple types of nurses, doctors and other health care professionals. With the versatility throughout the career, and the many types of nursing positions that are available through the courses, students have many options when considering the various nursing careers.

Is nursing a difficult major? This is one of the most common questions that are asked of students that are in the nursing programs, as well as nurses that are being interviewed by potential students of the program.

When considering the degree of difficulty that comes with the nursing program, students should consider the length of the program, the background information that is required or the prerequisites for the classes and the program and the skills that the student must possess to ensure the success throughout the nursing program.

Nursing shouldn’t be considered a difficult major, but students need to understand the amount of information that is required to learn throughout the program.

Though there is more information to learn throughout the nursing program than there might be with other types of majors, students that adhere to a studying program and learn the information presented in a timely manner with effective studying techniques are easily able to absorb the information that is learned throughout the program and therefore find the nursing program without a significant degree of difficulty.

The types of nursing program that has been chosen can determine the level of difficulty that is found while completing the program. There are three main types of nursing programs that can be chosen from including a nursing assistant, a licensed practical nurse and a registered nurse.

Nursing assistant courses can be completed in as little as three to six months, and even available through distance education courses.

Licensed practical nurses can be completed in less than two years, where registered nursing programs can be completed in as little as three to four years. This way, the student can gauge the information that must be learned and the difficulty of the program based on the length of the nursing program time.

Nursing requires the student to make a commitment of three to four years to become a registered nurse, as little as two years to become a licensed practical nurse and as little as a few months to become a nursing assistant. Since there are so many options that are available through the nursing career, more and more students are beginning to choose the nursing profession for their source of income.

Is nursing a hard major? Any major that is chosen can be hard if the student does not prepare for the work that is being learned and does not take measures to ensure that the lessons are learned. Nursing is no different. Sure, there is a vast amount of information that must be learned through the course of each class, through the course of each semester – but staying on top of this information that must be learned can ensure that the student is going to be able to absorb the current information and build on to this education foundation with the new lessons that are required to learn.

There are many things that are learned through the nursing program that would be helpful to create a certain type of background, including English, sciences and math. Having a background in those subjects and topics can be an effective way to reduce the hardness that can be associated with the nursing education.

There are many components of nursing school that can help to reduce the difficulty that comes with the nursing profession education. Using study groups, study guides and other tools that are used to reduce the work load can be an effective way to absorb the information and use the guides to reduce the time that is spent studying. In addition, learning effective studying techniques is an effective way to absorb the information the first time, to reduce the amount of studying that must be completed through the program. There is a lot of information that must be learned, and it is important to keep on task when it comes to learning this information to avoid falling behind.

A solid background for the information that is going to be learned can help to ease the program lessons. Using courses in anatomy and physiology before being introduced into the nursing program can give the nursing student the solid background needed in order to be successful at the profession.

Though the average nursing program can take up to four years, there are many students that would like to be finished school quicker and therefore have chosen to take part in the techniques that can be used to expedite the learning program. These students learn the methods and techniques to expedite the programs and decrease the length of time required to finish the program to enable the student to become a nurse, quicker.

Here are some of the methods that can be used to accelerate the nursing program while taking part in the educational process:

Back to Back Courses
Through many of the nursing programs, there are breaks that are scheduled in between the courses and the semesters. Students that are wishing to accelerate the nursing program can skip these breaks and take the classes that are offered through the course of the break. This can be an effective way to reduce the time that it takes to complete the course and ensure that you are able to start your nursing career sooner.

Use Online Courses
There are many delivery options that are available for nursing courses. Choosing to combine the online courses and distance education courses that are available with traditional classes that are taken in the classroom can be an effective way to reduce the overall amount of time that it takes to complete the course in the first place.

Use Previous Education
There are many programs that may be applicable to the nursing degree. Using these programs can be an effective way to avoid having to re-take the classes again in the future. Using the previous education, the student can easily find that they are able to have the courses removed from the must-take list and are exempt from them in the future.

BSN to MSN programs provide an intermediate link between the two degree levels, conversely, the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing. The former academic credit is a prerequisite requirement for students who want to progress to the latter level because it provides them with an introduction into the medical field. The knowledge and skills already acquired are recounted and advanced in this course. However, many certified schools do not place especial emphasis on having to have featured in a nursing environment at the Bachelor’s level in order to qualify for the next level.

BSN to MSN programs usually feature a concise revisit to the basics of medicine and other fundamentals in the medical field. This includes learning on the background of the clinical care in both theoretical and laboratory sessions. The latter can include being involved in actual practice in a hospital environment. This period usually lasts less than two years.

The latter half of the Master’s course in Nursing is devoted to instilling more skills into the students who feature in more advanced areas of specialization.

These include clinical fields, obstetrical care, and being certified as midwives. A nurse can also specialize as an anesthetist to work in operation rooms to assist in caring for patients undergoing surgery. During the final months, students spend much of their time learning about certifications, and being prepared for integration into the medical sector. They also learn about the licensing measures that they need to undergo, in order to enter practice.

The BSN to MSN programs can take from as short as a year and a half to a maximum of two years to complete. This applies to students who specifically major in nursing during their BSN level. This is because they already have sufficient knowledge in the sciences, which forms an ingredient to pursuing fulfilling studies in all medical courses especially in this career.

There are several different kinds of nursing degrees and several types of nursing programs that enable one to have a successful career in their field of choice. Take the RN and LPN for example. RN is a Registered Nurse while LPN is a Licensed Practical Nurse and there is a major difference between these two types of nursing degrees. By looking at the scope of practice and duties expected from these two career paths, it is pretty easy to see the distinct difference that separates one from the other.

Job Description
The first major difference can be spotted in the manner the LPN and RN execute their duties and what is expected from them. RNs have a higher performance expectation compared to LPNs. When they are out on the medical floor, both groups share the same duties but as far as medical responsibilities are concerned, RN’s have more on the weighing scale.

LPNs are task oriented when it comes to bedside care while RN’s are supposed to view the larger picture. This means that they must analyze the underlying factors that influence the patients’ health and work towards ensuring that they are addressed. In addition to this, there are a couple of activities that are performed by RN’s and not by LPNs. These include pushing IV’s, hanging blood and chemo and applying triage drugs. While this is the case, it is important to note that this might vary from one state to another.

To cap it all, in most instances, the LPNs are under the supervision of RN’s though they have to work in a cooperative manner. Note that in instances when a LPN is working in home care, they are also required to consult with a RN before changing the health care plan of the patient. For this reason, it is easy to conclude that the work of a RN is comprehensive compared to that of a LPN.

Salary
At the entry level, RN’s are able to earn more compared to LPNs. This may be because their job is easier and the LPN Prerequisites are easier to handle. In this case, the LPNs annual salary is $ 40,110 while an RN receives a median salary of $ 57,280. It is ideal to note that in both instances, there are various opportunities to advance in salary expectations. If they move into management positions or become professors in major universities they can earn an annual salary of $ 70,000 to 57,280.

Many people who have become an LPN joke about how an LPN actually stands for “Lowest Paid Nurse”. In fact, that would really fit the saying since LPN’s make a lot less than most other kinds of nurses. To many in the LPN field, they often wish they went to school for a little bit longer to acquire their RN. To anyone thinking about coming a nurse, more education is definitely the way to go. Spend a little more time on school and the benefits of a better salary will surely reward you in the future.

Once a nurse has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN), he or she can decide to continue on to become a nurse practitioner which requires a Doctorate Degree, referred to as a DNP. This will allow the nurse to practice in the general fields of medicine, but will not enable that person to practice specialty medicine such as adult, family or pediatric specialties as would an APRN. The reason they don’t qualify for certification is that a DNP is an academic degree and does not carry the necessary clinical/practical applications that would accompany an APRN.

While this may sound confusing, it boils down to the fact that a DPN is, for all intents and purposes, a nurse practitioner, only just not in specializations within the medical field. During the last year of school, whether online or at local universities, the DPN student will complete a practice inquiry project directly under one of the faculty advisors. This is a highly esteemed degree and qualifies a nurse to earn considerably higher wages in a profession that already pays quite well on a national average.

There are two ways to complete the program. The student can either enter as an MSN or as a BSN. Of course the length of time it takes to complete an online BSN to DNP online program will depend on which degree the student already has achieved. They are two completely separate tracks because one will obviously need to take the nursing student through the required MSN coursework prior to commencing the DNP academics and practical applications.

For a nursing student who is interested in advancing his/her career and being in the upper echelon of the field, becoming a DNP is the degree to be sought after. From this point it is possible to even further advance your career quite easily to become certified as an APRN where you will be actually 100% responsible for patients, however, still under the direct supervision of a licensed M.D. or D.O.

Students may enter the program with either a BSN or MSN. Specialty areas for Post-BSN DNP students include adult, family and pediatric practice tracks. Post-BSN DNP graduates from these tracks will be eligible for certification as a nurse practitioner. Post-MSN DNP graduates do not qualify for certification in an APRN specialty area because the DNP degree is an academic degree that is distinct and separate from the certification process. A practice inquiry project will be completed during the last year of the program under the direction of one’s faculty advisor.

However, the entry level two nursing degrees that would provide the best opportunities for job security and above average starting salaries would be the LPN and RN degrees.

CNA Certification
The most basic career in nursing is CNA Certification which is a program usually offered at a local Vocational school, community college or at some teaching hospitals. The course is usually less than six months in duration and will give you the basics for sitting for your state’s CNA exam. Pay rate for a nurse’s assistant is usually just above minimum wage, and responsibilities are minimal. They work directly under nurses to assist in patient care, such as feeding, bathing and assisting in dressing the patient.

LPN Degree Program
The first level of nurses who work directly with patients is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). In some states they are referred to as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). This level of nursing prepares you to perform certain medical duties that a CNA is not allowed to do, such as dispensing meds and giving injections. An LPN does work under the RN’s on the floor (in hospital, clinical and private medical practices) but in many cases where the patient is non-critical, will see to the care of the patient almost entirely. The LPN Degree Program generally lasts about 12 to 18 months including clinical/practical studies prior to qualifying for the state board exams in the state in which you live.

RN Degree Program
Registered nurses are the first level of nurses that are actually considered to be ‘professional’ nurses. Both CNA’s and LPN’s work under the supervision of RN’s. There are actually a few ways to become an RN. Many nurses choose to become an LPN first and then take the additional course work required to sit for the state boards for licensure. However, when entering school to become an RN in a direct route, there are two types of degrees that can get you there, right through to certification. An Associate’s Degree is a two year course of study culminating in final exams and state boards, while a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing is a four year program. This will enable you to both start at a higher rate of pay as well as carry more responsibilities. A BSN will also allow you to specialize in a particular field of medicine.

No matter which path you take to becoming a nurse it is an extremely rewarding (at times highly stressful!) career with excellent job prospects in both the near and distant future. There is always a shortage of nurses so there is plenty of job security. You have made the decision to enter into one of life’s most rewarding careers, now it’s time to plan your course of action. Within the near future, demand for nurses is estimated to skyrocket; demographic polls have suggested that between the years of 2006 to 2016 this demand will increase over 23%.

As of May 2006, the average hourly wage of a nurse within the United States was $28.70, while the average annual income was $59,710. Today, in 2010, the average annual nursing salary has already risen to between approximately $62,450-$65,130, with an average hourly rate of roughly $31.31. The states with the highest ranking annual salaries include California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. These states pay annual salaries ranging between $73,160- $83,040 and hourly wages between $35.17- $39.92. Wages such as these make nursing a viable and very much sought after career field in today’s work force, and the wages are only getting higher as demand for trained nurses increases. With nurses in such high demand and earning such enticing salaries, many men and women and considering formal schooling in these fields, however, many are not only unaware of the skills required to become employed in the nursing field, but also uncertain of how to tell if they themselves fit the profile for a nursing position.

Nursing is a demanding field both physically as well as emotionally. Nurses are required to deal with a wide range of situations from the mundane and ordinary tasks of everyday medical offices, to the frightening and shocking events witnessed by those in emergency rooms. They therefore must possess a wide range of skills, of those pertaining to both educational as well as personality or character trait qualities. They must be prepared not only to handle life or death situations, but also synonymously be able to help others through the crisis. Nurses must therefore have well honed people skills, be able to experience and fully express empathy, and compassion, comfort a patient, and be able to deal with crisis situations while remaining calm. Nurses must also be patient, willing to continuously learn and well adapt to teaching others skills and methods of handling patients, or dealing with situations. A study in the “Journal of the American Medical Association” by Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN, also sites that 40% of nurses experience burnout during their careers. Likewise it can also be noted that nurses must be well aware of the stresses of their positions, and well educated in how to deal and cope with these stresses.

Aside from personality or character traits, candidates for nursing also must possess a certain nursing prerequisites to be eligible for enrollment in nursing programs. While prerequisites for nursing programs may differ from school to school, those looking to be accepted into nursing programs in the United States must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Average to above average marks in science and mathematical skills are also often required for acceptance to most programs. Those looking to be accepted into baccalaureate programs often require more courses than associated degree programs as well. While enrolled in post secondary programs for nursing, individuals will also cover subjects of study such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medication administration, ethics, and nursing theory. Depending on the level or degree of specialization within the nursing field, one may also have to pursue several years of prior post secondary preparation courses in order qualify for the intended field.

Online degrees are becoming an increasingly attractive option for more and more people today, especially when it comes to choosing a nursing school program. Online nursing programs offer training through web casting or recorded videos and documents, and live interactive chat. It all boils down to this though: are online nursing school programs the same, if not better, than the traditional on-campus education?

The Pro’s

Programs such as online nursing classes provide huge perks for both students and professors alike. Schedule flexibility is one; distance learning emphasizes an asynchronous method of learning, meaning two people do not have to be available at the same time to be able to interact with each other. Nursing students which couldn’t make it to the web cast that day can easily watch its recorded version or read the professor’s documentation about it later.

Another benefit would be transport issues. Due to the fact that lessons take place in the virtual world, students can just simply stay at home and learn without going to have to go to the college’s campus especially if it’s a state or two away. The students are also provided with easier access to information. Being online, a student can easily get research information on homework or coursework activities through wikis, blogs, e-books and forums. Online Nursing School Programs also provide the benefit of clinical activities when you’ve reached that part of the program. Usually the online institution will find a medical facility near your home where there they’ll send staff to teach and assist you on your clinical requirements.

The Con’s

Although the advantages mentioned above are quite enticing, there are those who remain skeptical with this kind of approach to learning especially with hands-on, in-the-field degrees like Nursing. One disadvantage of online nursing school programs would be the student’s interest. Many complain that they have a hard time comprehending such long and dry lectures made by professors with complementing documents which are just as dreary. Clarification usually takes time to be made unlike in the campus were professors are easily available for the student and can quickly provide an answer to any of the student’s inquiries about the topic.

Another disadvantage of online school nursing programs would be the student’s ability when it comes to the clinical requirements. Research made by the U.S. Department of Education show that although students of online nursing school programs tend to excel in lectures, on the field performance sometimes leave more to be desired.

In all of this, it really depends on the individual as to which method to utilize in order to obtain his Nursing Degree. If you believe that you’re a self starter and can work without easily being distracted, then you should enroll in an online nursing school program. Some schools who offer this kind of service are the Indiana State University, The College Network and Ashford University. Otherwise, stick to the traditional on-campus learning, the vast temptations on the internet might get in the way of your learning.
